An internship or training placement indicates a company experience of variable duration with the main purpose of learning and training. According to Italian legislation (Law 196/97 – implementing decree of the Ministry of Labor No. 108 of May 12, 1998), an internship cannot in any way be considered an employment relationship and therefore there is no remuneration. In some cases, the company may, at its discretion, grant the trainee a scholarship of variable value as an expense reimbursement. Furthermore, the trainee is not entitled to social security contributions, but only to insurance contributions against work-related accidents.
The internship can only be carried out following the signing of an agreement between the company (hosting entity) and an educational institution (promoting entity) – university, school, vocational training center – which ensures the administrative and insurance management (INAIL and civil liability) of the trainee. The trainee does not accrue holidays, leave, or sick periods. Short periods of interruption of the internship may be granted by the company tutor upon request of the interested party. There is no notice of termination from either party (i.e., the internship can be terminated without notice and without justification by either the company or the trainee). The internship has a maximum duration of 6 months. In some cases and only for certain categories, it is possible for the duration to be extended to 12 months.
